Sa ulat ni Glen Juego sa Super Radyo DzBB, sinabing dakong 4:40 am nang pasukin si Guarte, 32-anyos, ng isang lalaki sa loob ng bahay ng isang barangay kagawad at sinaksak.
Ayon sa Oriental Mindoro Provincial Police Office, nagawa pa ng biktima na makahingi ng tulong pero binawian din ng buhay.Nagpaabot ng pakikiramay ang Philippine Sports Commission sa mga naulila ni Guarte. Sa ulat ni Vincent John Abordo sa GMA Regional TV News, sinabing nakatakas ang salarin at patuloy na inaalam ng awtoridad ang kaniyang pagkakakilanlan.“Patuloy ang pakikipag-ugnayan natin sa Philippine National Police para mahanap ang tao sa likod ng pagkakapaslang kay Mervin Guarte. Binigyan natin ng direktiba ang PPO-OrMin sa pangunguna ni PCOL Edison Revita upang agarang makamit ang hustisya,” saad ni Dolor sa Facebook post.
Noong nakaraang taon, nagwagi ng gintong medalya si Guarte sa 32nd SEA Games sa Cambodia para sa four-man relay team sa obstacle course racing. Nakakuha rin si Guarte ng gold medal sa2019 SEA Games sa men's 5km ng OCR, at dalawang silver medal sa 2011 edition para sa 800m at 1500m track events. — GMA Integrated News
