Mervin Guarte, a Southeast Asian Games gold medalist, was tragically killed in a stabbing incident in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro. The athlete was stabbed in his sleep and despite being taken to the hospital, succumbed to his injuries.
Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Mervin Guarte was killed from stabbing in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro early Tuesday morning. According to Glen Juego’s Tuesday report on Super Radyo DzBB, Guarte was stabbed in his sleep around 4:30 a.m. by a man who entered the house.The Oriental Mindoro Provincial Police Office reported that the 32-year-old athlete was then sleeping in the house of a barangay kagawad.
The police added that Guarte was still able to call for help and was brought to the hospital, but eventually met his demise. Guarte was a member of the Philippine Air Force and was assigned to Lipa, Batangas. The Philippine Sports Commission has expressed its condolences. Guarte recently won gold during the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia last year, helping the four-man team capture the title in the men's team relay of the obstacle course racing. He also copped a gold medal in 2019 SEA Games after reigning supreme in the men's 5km of OCR. Guarte is also a holder of two silver medals in the 2011 edition, placing second in both the 800m and 1500m track events.
