The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) asserts its authority in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), issuing radio challenges to Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) vessels encroaching within the country's exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) asserted its authority in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) on Friday, issuing radio challenges against Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) vessels operating within the country's exclusive economic zone (EEZ). The PCG reported that its vessel BRP Cabra successfully deterred CCG 3103 from approaching the coast of Zambales, pushing it back to a distance of 85-90 nautical miles.
However, CCG 3103 was later replaced by CCG 3304, a significantly larger vessel, prompting concerns about potential attempts to outmaneuver the BRP Cabra. The PCG noted that CCG 3304 measures 111 meters in length and 46 meters in width, dwarfing its predecessor. Despite the size disparity, the BRP Cabra remained resolute, issuing hourly radio challenges to CCG 3304, asserting its presence and reminding the vessel of its illegal encroachment into Philippine waters. The PCG emphasized the unwavering commitment of the BRP Cabra, highlighting the Philippine Coast Guard's dedication to safeguarding the nation's maritime rights in the WPS.The WPS, a name used by the Philippines to denote portions of the South China Sea falling within its EEZ and jurisdiction, is the subject of ongoing territorial disputes. China claims 'indisputable sovereignty' over the entire South China Sea, a claim that overlaps with the offshore territories of neighboring Asian countries. This dispute has its roots in historical claims and the discovery of substantial undersea gas deposits in the region. In 2016, the Philippines achieved a significant legal victory against China in a ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA). The PCA determined that China lacked a legal basis for asserting historic rights over resources within the sea areas outlined by its 'nine-dash line.' It also stated that while Chinese navigators, fishermen, and those of other nations had historically utilized the islands in the South China Sea, there was no evidence to support China's claim of exclusive control over the waters or their resources. China, however, continues to reject the PCA ruling, deeming it 'illegal' and 'invalid.' President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. has firmly stated that the WPS belongs to the Filipino people, despite ongoing Chinese encroachments in the resource-rich region.
