The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) detected and monitored a Chinese Coast Guard vessel operating near Capones Island in Zambales province, asserting the Philippines' sovereign rights within its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported the sighting of a Chinese Coast Guard vessel near Capones Island in Zambales province on Saturday, January 4, 2025. The PCG detected the vessel, identified as 5901, approximately 54 nautical miles off the coast of Capones Island using Canada's Dark Vessel Detection (DVD) system. PCG air and sea assets were promptly deployed to the area to confirm the presence of the Chinese vessel around 5:00 PM.

PCG vessels and aircraft continuously challenged the presence of the Chinese Coast Guard, emphasizing that it was operating within the Philippines’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in accordance with the Philippine Maritime Zones Law and UNCLOS (United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea). At 8:00 PM, the PCG vessel BRP Cabra (MRRV-4409) continued to monitor the Chinese vessel as it moved westward, 85 nautical miles away from Zambales. The PCG remains committed to closely monitoring this Chinese Coast Guard vessel to ensure that Filipino fishermen can operate safely and without harassment within our Exclusive Economic Zone. This incident follows a similar sighting in July 2024, when a 12,000-ton Chinese vessel, five times larger than the largest PCG vessel, was detected near BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal in the West Philippine Sea (WPS)
