The Philippine Coast Guard confronted China's largest coast guard vessel, 'The Monster,' after it entered Philippine waters near Capones Island in Zambales.
A Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) vessel, helicopter, and aircraft confronted a Chinese coast guard vessel, CCG 5901, also known as 'The Monster', after it entered Philippine waters on Saturday. The Chinese vessel sailed as close as 54 nautical miles off the coast of Capones Island in Zambales. The PCG detected the presence of CCG 5901 on Thursday using Canada's Dark Vessel Detection (DVD) system.
Acting promptly, Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan, the PCG Commandant, dispatched the BRP Cabra (MRRV-4409), a helicopter, and a Caravan aircraft to respond. By 5 p.m., the assets confirmed the Chinese vessel's presence. Upon confirmation, the PCG vessel and aircraft challenged the Chinese vessel, asserting that its activities were within the Philippines' Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). PCG personnel emphasized the country's sovereign rights over its EEZ and its commitment to ensuring the safety of Filipino fishermen. As of 8 p.m. Saturday, the BRP Cabra continued to monitor the Chinese vessel, which had moved westward to approximately 85 nautical miles from Zambales. In a statement, Admiral Gavan reiterated the PCG's dedication to upholding maritime security and maintaining a vigilant presence in Philippine waters
