Former Spokesperson Salvador Panelo demands the resignation of Justice Secretary Remulla for contradicting President Marcos' stance on the ICC, while Remulla insists on engaging with the court in a spirit of cooperation.
Former Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo has called for the resignation of Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla and other officials who contradict President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s stance on the International Criminal Court ( ICC ).
Panelo criticized Remulla's recent statement that the Philippines could cooperate with the ICC on certain drug war-related issues, asserting that it undermines Marcos' firm position that the ICC has no jurisdiction over the Philippines and that the country will not cooperate with the court. Panelo emphasized that President Marcos was correct in stating that the ICC's attempt to assert jurisdiction over the Philippines is an insult to the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity. He argued that alter egos of the President should resign if they disagree with the President's pronouncements.Remulla, however, maintains a different perspective, stating in an interview with Reuters that the Philippines will engage with the ICC soon in a spirit of comity. He expressed hope for dialogue and collaboration, stating that some individuals are working to bridge the divide and facilitate a meeting between the Philippines and the ICC. This differing stance comes amidst ongoing investigations into the Philippines' bloody drug war under former President Rodrigo Duterte, which has been accused of numerous human rights violations. The ICC initiated investigations into these allegations in 2019, prompting Duterte to withdraw the Philippines from the Rome Statute, the treaty that established the ICC.The House Quad-Committee recently recommended filing charges against Duterte and his allies, Senators Ronald 'Bato' dela Rosa and Christopher 'Bong' Go, for crimes against humanity related to the drug war. President Marcos has left the decision of whether to pursue charges against Duterte and his associates to the Department of Justice
