The Manila police and local government have announced a gun ban and liquor ban in preparation for the Feast of Jesus Nazareno celebration.

Firearms and liquors will be prohibited as part of the security measures in light of the celebration of the Feast of Jesus Nazareno, according to the Manila police and local government on Friday. In a press conference, Manila Police District (MPD) chief Police Brigadier General Thomas Ibay said the gun ban will be effective from January 8 to 11.

“I would also like to announce that there will be a gun ban from January 8 to 11 here in Manila in connection with the Feast of the Nazarene,” Ibay said. Meanwhile, Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna said a liquor ban will be imposed around the Quiapo area from January 8 to 10. “Usually the liquor ban is only in the Quiapo area. This is the only area covered by the feast. This is effective from the eve of the feast until January 10, so January 8 to 10,” Lacuna said. Jesus Nazareno feast is a 10-day activity which started from December 31, 2024 and will culminate on January 9, 2025 with Traslacion or the procession of the black image of Jesus Christ. The feast activities started with the nine-day novena masses on December 31, 2024 to January 8, 2025. A midnight thanksgiving procession was also conducted on December 31, 2024 as part of the celebration. Pahalik or the devotees’ kissing or touching of Jesus Nazareno replica at the Quirino Grandstand will be conducted from January 6 to January 9.
