Late Portland goal keeps Wave from notching third straight shutout victory; NWSL showdown draws 18,130 fans to Snapdragon Stadium
The San Diego Wave FC collected a valuable 1-1 tie — and learned a painful lesson — Friday night against their league’s defending champion, the Portland Thorns, before 18,130 at Snapdragon Stadium.
On a corner kick, Thorns rookie Reyna Reyes was left alone just beyond the back post. When Sam Coffey’s floater cleared a group of players, Reyes headed it inside far post, past Wave goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan. San Diego Wave FC forward Sofia Jakobsson scores against Portland Thorns FC goalkeeper Bella Bixby .
Sheridan made the match’s best save, kicking aside a close shot by forward Hina Sugita in a hectic first half for Wave defenders.
