Summary Revisit the disaster that wasn't in Y2K, a disaster-comedy movie making its debut at the 2024 South by Southwest festival. The film reimagines what might have happened had all the doom and gloom predictions come true and technology went haywire when the calendar changed from 1999 to 2000.
Kyle Mooney: I think that there was probably the building obsession of the fact that nothing really went down. So there had to be something written about it, and I think God chose us. Rachel Zegler: I came across it really late in the game. There ended up being an opening in the cast. I was in the middle of Death Valley, Nevada on a commercial shoot, and I had no service, and my agent was breaking up on the phone. So I was, like, wandering around the desert, this is a true story, trying to get the script to load on my phone. And I read it in-between takes of this commercial I was doing.
Rachel Zegler: I think there's nuggets of wholesome, that you find in it that you're not expecting once the turn happens. It really is kind of heartwarming. I found that in both Brigsby Bear and in Y2K. Am I right in saying that, Kyle? Mason Gooding: Working with him on set, that spontaneity of brilliance kind of comes forth in the way that he conducts himself as a director. I feel like we'd be halfway through the rehearsal of a scene, and he'd get struck by some sort of creative aura and be like, "What about this?" It's never domineering, it's never imposing.
Mason Gooding: I'll say, as someone who predicates a lot of my personality on nostalgia, I find any film that sort of touches on an aesthetic or an atmosphere somewhere between the late '90s and early 2000s, I feel like I can kind of go back to that time in my psyche and sort of revel in what was and see how that kind of translates to today. I can't tell you how many Walkman or retro headsets I've seen today, just to feel as if they have a part in what this time period elicits.
I'm always curious when the nostalgia for the '90s is popping up because a lot of it is carried by Gen Z right now. What are your impressions of the '90s? What, to you guys, is cool about the '90s?
