RT scretladyspider: I was diagnosed with MDD, then bipolar, and now unspecified mood disorder but I mainly struggle with depression. What we thought in my case was bipolar was actually ADHD. They have symptom overlap. I wrote about it. Might help you?

I have gone through some changes since my diagnosis, and wonder if I have combination type ADHD instead – but regardless, ADHD is a well known but very misunderstood disorder. In an effort to understand myself, as well as to help others understand themselves, here I have compiled a list of many of the ways that ADHD-PI effect me – something I feel is very important because so often, it seems like it’s completely invisible.

I had also read that if a person had bipolar disorder, and was only given antidepressants, they would become manic. I was hospitalized for a depressive episode twice in 2014, then again twice in 2015, then twice in 2016. Only during two hospitalizations was I given a mood stabilizer with any success, and on one occasion the doctor asked me what I had been diagnosed with rather than doing any evaluation on me whatsoever.

Because my hyperactivity presentation is very internal , and because my own thoughts on ADHD were clouded by stigma as well as not knowing much about it outside of knowing a few people who had it growing up, I found myself doubting my diagnosis. I couldn’t help but wonder how no one noticed after all these years of being in and out of doctor’s offices – and, after all, the Adderall is helping me function, and therefore I shouldn’t feel guilt about benefiting from it.

This was actually a repeated issue at my job at the library, because I’d go up to get journals and deliver documents, and deliver the wrong ones. I had to keep a little notebook with my own hand written instructions on how to do it, and then I had to turn on music or something with headphones because I just could absolutely not focus on the task at hand.

I have difficulty switching from one task to another, or making myself do a new thing once I’m stuck on one thing.
