The city of Fairhope has mandated its water customers restrict water usage due to equipment failure paired with high usage. Meanwhile, Riviera Utilities is asking its water customers to voluntarily conserve water.

Sullivan said the city can trace the excess water consumption directly to irrigation during what’s been a particularly dry and hot August. Late last week, Fairhope residents had already been asked to voluntarily conserve water by only irrigating overnight. This, after daily usage rates reached more than nine million gallons for a week straight with some days topping 9.5 million.
Meanwhile, Riviera Utilities water customers in south Baldwin County are being asked to watch their water usage as well. The extreme heat and lack of rain is also taking a toll on its system. Riviera serves about 12,000 water customers and said usage peaked Monday, August 12, 2024 at 2.5 million gallons of their three-million gallon capacity.
