The last special election the FNSB had was in 2004, according to borough records.
Published: Feb. 15, 2024 at 9:21 AM AKSTFAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Fairbanks North Star Borough hasn’t beckoned voters to the polls outside the month of October in 20 years, but that could soon change.
Those in opposition to the election have assailed the ordinance in more ways than one, but a common thread loops back to the notion of breaking the borough’s 20-year streak. In 2000, the electorate shot down a $57 million borough bond measure meant for technology and playground upgrades at local elementary schools. The idea got a yes from 5,241 borough residents, and a no from 6,098, according to borough records. About 17% of registered voters showed up for that special election, compared to 27 percent at the 2000 regular election.
So, will there be a fourth special election in the 21st century in the Fairbanks North Star Borough? The answer will come from the assembly, who will decide Thursday night.
