Vision Pro is a pricey yet typically Apple step into the virtual world
Apple's Vision Pro produces augmented reality that mixes the real world with views produced in its headset.Since the concept of virtual reality first appeared in the late 1980s, proponents have struggled to take it mainstream. But donning a headset that blocks out the real world and presents a computer-generated one via eye-sized screens has never quite caught on, for many reasons.
While VR remains a niche tech, some of those niches are powerful. Meta, the company born as Facebook, is the premiere seller of VR gear, having acquired headset developer Oculus in 2014. Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg is so enamored of VR’s potential that he bet the farm on it as the Next Big Thing — a wager that, so far, has cost the company dearly. Meta’s Reality Labs lost almost $14 billion last year, and another $3 billion in the first quarter of 2023 alone. Yes, there have been layoffs.
Apple’s Vision Pro takes a different approach. The ski goggle-style headset looks futuristic, bristling with a slew of sensors and cameras that look both out at the world and in at your eyes. There are also two high-resolution displays that provide each eye with the same resolution screen as a 4K TV. Sound pods sit over each ear, and a wide, soft fabric band wraps the back of your head to hold it in place.
When someone else is in the room, the Vision Pro displays a video rendering of your eyes on the outside of the goggles, a so-called persona that you generate during the setup process. The idea is to give others a sense that you are approachable, though some Vision Pro actions keep the goggles opaque, indicating you don’t want to be disturbed.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. There are plenty of multi-player VR games and tandem use is possible. Apple’s emphasis on AR instead of VR makes in-person social use all the more intriguing.
