‘That seems overboard’ — out-of-town police in Uvalde block cameras, disrupt coverage of tragedy’s aftermath

Telemundo journalist Jorge Miramontes talks with law enforcement officers after being informed that news media cannot be on public property near Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Uvalde on Friday. As waves of police from departments across Texas converge on Uvalde, officers have continued to intimidate, harass and impede journalists covering the aftermath ofwith an assault-style rifle at Robb Elementary School on May 24.

“Their main function is potentially whatever we might need them to assist us with,” DiPiazza said. “We’ve given some downtime to our people to help deal with this situation, so these other officers have stepped in, and they’ve helped. My understanding is they’re under some instruction from us to try to keep a respectful distance from funeral activities.

Asked by a reporter which department he worked for, one of the officers said to look at his badge, then turned away so the reporter could not see it. He said he doubted the two officers who accosted the journalists Sunday were from his office but that he’d find out. Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said the two officers were not from his agency. Bexar deputies helped out in Uvalde for two days after the massacre, then returned home, he said.
