Trey Mancini will stand up for cancer on Wednesday for Ryan Minor, a former Oriole and manager in the Baltimore system.PHILADELPHIA — Someone made Trey Mancini aware of an All-Star Game tribute during his flight home from Denver. Mancini competed in the 2021 Home Run Derby but did not stay at Coors Field for the Midsummer Classic or the Stand Up To Cancer display during the game. Longtime Baltimore Orioles teammate Cedric Mullins and Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Valdimir Guerrero Jr.
Wednesday afforded Mancini a chance to reciprocate. During the sport’s biannual ritual that brings awareness to cancer, Mancini held a card recognizing Ryan Minor’s fight. Minor, a former Orioles infielder, is battling Stage IV colon cancer: the same form Mancini survived in 2020. Minor managed Mancini at Class A Delmarva during his stint in the Baltimore Orioles organization. The 48-year-old utilityman played 142 major league games from 1998-2001 and is perhaps best known as the third baseman who started in front of Cal Ripken Jr. after he ended a streak of consecutive games played at 2,632.
In March 2020, Mancini was diagnosed with Stage III colon cancer after feeling fatigued during spring training. He missed the entire 60-game season in 2020 and was declared cancer-free that November.
