This Copenhagen-based accessories label is empowering women a world away in Guatemala.
Anna Andrés remembers the first time she traveled to Guatemala from her home in Denmark. She was a kid, and her mom, who worked as a nurse, took her along on a volunteer trip. Andrés bonded with some of the Mayan women she met there. Now, as an adult, she’s working to help empower them.
Five years ago, having graduated from nursing school and taken a job in the mental health sector, Andrés started [Pura Utz] , a jewelry and accessories label handcrafted by a group of 22 women in Guatemala.earrings, necklaces, and bags are cheery and bright; their fruit, vegetable, and flower motifs get hundreds of thousands of likes on Instagram.
“The craft and project come before the design,” says Andrés. “This means that every design is based on what the women know how to make, and then from there, we try to create something new and special.” She adds: “It’s about introducing new skills and systems of quality control, but also working patiently with each woman since they don’t always know how brilliant and talented they are, which limits their confidence in what they think they can create.
Bernabela is Andrés’s partner, who runs the collective of women artisans in Guatemala while Andrés works in. Andrés travels back and forth often. Bernabela’s daughter Elisa works as an assistant while studying accounting and business management at university. Everything is handmade on sight in Guatemala, including the dust bags and the shipping bags.
“These women are being paid three times as much as they would be working for a giant manufacturing company, or anywhere else in the country, really,” Andrés points out. “With that money, they can actually improve their lives.” The Pura Utz business is bridging two worlds, one in Europe and one in Guatemala. “Bernabela’s life is a long way to the studio in Copenhagen,” Andrés says. “Trying to connect those two places isn’t always easy.
