A letter in response to Harrisburg City Council approving 16M from the American Rescue Plan and bonuses for firefighters and police officers - and nothing for the EMS providers serving the city.

PennLive Letters to the Editor

Since 2012, the number of EMS providers has steadily declined in Pennsylvania by 5% annually and exacerbated by the COVID pandemic. The overwhelming demand for emergency and non-emergency services, along with insurance carriers financially marginalizing our profession, have more EMS providers leaving the service for better career choices and volunteers simply walking away.

Recently, Harrisburg City Council approved bonuses for the police and fire departments – not the EMS providers serving Harrisburg. In February, our state government allocated $25M from the American Rescue Plan to 2,115 emergency service organizations. 1,259 licensed EMS agencies competed with the fire service through the Office of the Fire Commissioner – which has no EMS oversight. At most, each could receive $11,820.33.

It is time to change the conversation in Pennsylvania. Our antiquated EMS system does not appeal to the current or future workforce. EMS providers, career or volunteer, are an essential component of public safety. EMS providers should be recognized and compensated comparatively to firefighters and police officers.
