The Supreme Court (SC) has temporarily halted the Commission on Elections (Comelec) from disqualifying or rejecting the candidacy applications of five individuals vying for various positions in the upcoming national and local elections.

The Supreme Court (SC) issued temporary restraining orders ( TRO s) on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, halting the Commission on Elections ( Comelec ) from implementing its decisions to disqualify or reject the candidacy applications of five individuals vying for various positions in the upcoming national and local elections.

During its initial en banc session for the year, the SC granted TROs prohibiting the Comelec from designating Subair Guinthum Mustapha and Charles Savellano as nuisance candidates in their respective pursuits for Senate and Ilocos Sur First District representative. The court instructed the Comelec to submit its response to the petitions of Mustapha and Savellano within five days of receiving the notice, stipulating personal service and filing of the resolution and comment. The SC also issued a TRO in favor of Chito Bulatao Balintay, a member of the indigenous peoples of Zambales, who challenged the Comelec's resolution rejecting his application, preventing him from filing his candidacy for Zambales governor. This effectively directs the poll body to accept and process Balinay’s application, stated the tribunal. Further rulings saw the SC grant TROs for Edgar Erice, disqualified by the Comelec from running for Caloocan City's Second District representative, and Florendo de Ramos Ritualo Jr., contesting the Comelec resolution canceling his candidacy for councilor of San Juan City’s First District. The SC directed the Comelec to file its comment on the cases of Balintay, Erice, and Ritualo within 10 days of receiving the notice
