More students will have access to better mental health services, under a project the state announced on Wednesday to help 50 schools in 17 counties.Rutgers University Center for Comprehensive School Mental Health

to provide three years of training to the staff of schools in 17 counties, to improve the ways they identify struggling students, address their needs in school, and refer them to proper services if they need more than schools can offer. The state’s districts were invited to apply in the spring to join the Enhancing School Mental Health Services Project, and officials selected 50 schools in 38 districts to participate, based on the strength of the applications, officials said. The announcement of the project did not include its costs, and the Department of Education did not immediately respond to a request for that information.
