“An unusually high number” of Southwest employees didn’t show up for work at the airline’s Denver hub, according to Bloomberg News.
Chris Johnson, Southwest’s vice president of ground operations, circulated a memo to ramp workers on Dec. 21 declaring a “state of operational emergency” at its base in Denver after “an unusually high number” of employees didn’t show up for work,The Dallas-based company maintains a massive presence at Denver International Airport.
Jordan blamed the winter storm for snarling the airline’s “highly complex” network. He said Southwest’s tools for recovering from disruptions work “99% of the time, but clearly we need to double down” on upgrading systems to avoid a repeat of this week. Frustrated passengers stranded at airports, including Hollywood Burbank Airport , posted images of suitcases piled up in the baggage claim area.Southwest, the nation’s fourth largest domestic carrier, is now drawing scrutiny from the Biden administration.
