Nick Carlos helps customers find the perfect ugly Christmas sweater at his pop-up store, St. Nick's Ugly Christmas Sweater Shoppe. Behold the many merry pullovers of Nick Carlos, a jolly Gen-Xer who runs the biggest ugly sweater pop-up shop in San Antonio.
This is one of the many ugly Christmas sweaters Nick Carlos sells through his pop-up store, St. Nick's Ugly Christmas Sweater Shoppe.Carlos spends most of the year combing through thrift shops, estate sales and department stores for just about any crazy Christmas sweaters he can find, then dedicates the holidays to selling the pullovers for anywhere from $20 to $45. Meanwhile, fellow ride-share driver Corbitt adds to the over-the-top fun with her own handmade Christmas jewelry.
Carlos estimates he has 200 to 300 ugly Christmas sweaters in his collection. Most are wacky designs of the red, white and green variety, lined with candy canes, reindeer and other freaky Fair Isle patterns. Some are the unintentional stuff of nightmares knitted by the sweetest of aunts, while others are musty relics from the days of shoulder pads and stirrup pants.
“If it makes you kind of turn your head to the side and squint a little and just kind of scrunch your nose, those are the ones that get me going,” Carlos said. As Carlos zipped about the outdoor racks in an ugly sweater T-shirt and Santa cap, Corbitt and her mother, Emma Harrison, rang up shoppers in their respective Santa and elf dresses.
