Multiple Sclerosis attacks Black patients more severely and researchers are determined to find out why and how to treat it.
AUBURN, Ala. - Auburn University is a Research One university, meaning the university prioritizes research and competes for important funding opportunities. The University was chosen for an 850-thousand dollar grant to pioneer a study that examines a specific medical condition disproportionately impacting Black Alabamians in rural areas. Dr. Evelyn Hunter is leading the research team.
Multiple Sclerosis, better known as MS, affects the body’s central nervous system, disrupting communication between the brain and the body. According to research studies, nearly one million Americans are living with the disease, including three out of every one thousand black Americans. Drew Underwood is a part of the student research team and the project manager. He says it’s exciting to lead a groundbreaking study.
