A student at Auburn University crashed into a field in Opelika on Sunday evening, walking away with minor injuries.
Auburn University Student Pilot Unharmed After Crash in OpelikaOPELIKA, Ala. - Seeing and hearing a small private plane flying, landing, and taking off in the Auburn/Opelika area is common. According to the Aviation Safety Network, on Sunday evening, a female pilot was flying a single-passenger Auburn University plane and crashed off Watson Street in Opelika. Julianne Slaughter witnessed the crash.
“When I turned around it was descending pretty rapidly and I just started running to where it was going to obviously go down. It went through the trees and the plane went down,” she said. The Aviation Safety Network says the aircraft was a 2020 Cessna 172S Skyhawk, owned by Auburn University. The female pilot suffered minor injuries. Officials from Auburn University Campus Safety say university officials met with the pilot’s family and were unavailable for comment. Ernest Griggs says it is scary to see something like this happen so close to home.
“This is right here in Auburn...to have a plane crash here, right in the neighborhood. The good thing about it, is their homes are right here I mean, a couple hundred yards this way, there could have been two or three homes wiped out and with gas tanks back there, it could have blown up the entire neighborhood,” said Griggs.The Federal Aviation Administration is conducting a full review of the accident and their report has not yet been released.
