State Rep. Francis Thompson quit the Democratic Party in Louisiana and became a Republican on St. Patrick's Day, March 17."There are values and principles that I firmly hold on to the guide my decisions," Thompson announced."My conservative voting record over my years in the legislature speaks for itself.

The significance of this defection is that for the first time in 150 years — since Reconstruction — Republicans now hold a veto-proof majority in both houses of Louisiana's state legislature. Thompson isn't alone. Between Republican and three independent members of the state house, they already did manage to override a veto by Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards last year of the state's congressional map. But that was the first time a veto had been overridden in Louisiana since the early 1990s. Now, legislative Republicans can override vetoes without any help.

Not that there are any vetoes waiting for an override at the moment, but Edwards will remain in office for the rest of this year. If there's a veto to override, they can do it. Republicans are also favored to win back the governorship in this November's election.
