Ohio State's defense looked good all spring in Year 2 of Jim Knowles' spring, capped by a strong performance in the spring game.
When Day hired Knowles after the 2021 season to fix a dysfunctional defense, the mandate was immediate success. The Buckeyes improved statistically by a significant margin, but better offenses exposed their vulnerability to big plays.“Last year was our first year with coach Knowles,” senior linebacker Cody Simon said. “, we learned the defense a little bit, and now we're kind of refining and learning the nuances of how to play certain plays.
“In the 15 practices, his mental side of the game has developed so much,” Simon said of Hicks. “He's always in the film room. He's always getting extra work. It's hard. None of this stuff is easy to do, especially our offense gives us so many different looks. He's making plays out there. He had a really great game today, so I'm just proud of him.”
“I came to the conclusion that I’ve got to start moving differently on and off the field if I really want to do the things I know I can do,” Burke said. “And let people see that so it’s like a chain effect and everybody starts doing what they need to do.”
