A senior National Security Council official criticized China's deployment of warships near the Scarborough Shoal, calling it a 'steep escalation.' The official expressed concern over the PLAN vessels' aggressive maneuvers against Philippine ships and hoped diplomatic efforts would not be seen as cowardice.

A SENIOR National Security Council official on Thursday called China ’s deployment of warships along with other maritime forces to harass Philippine vessels in Bajo de Masinloc on Wednesday as a “steep escalation.”

He added that the actions of the PLAN vessel against Philippine ships engaged in lawful duties in Bajo de Masinloc are considered as a “provocation and an escalatory move.” “We hope that the People’s Republic of China does not see our diplomatic actions or our peaceful actions as cowardice. We do not want to be sending signals to China that they can do what they want simply because we do not want to escalate,” Malaya said.
