For the first time, Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) and Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) vessels actively confronted Philippine ships in the contested Scarborough Shoal, escalating maritime tensions and raising concerns over potential full-scale naval confrontations.

MANILA, Philippines — The navy of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, for the first time, participated alongside the Chinese Coast Guard in a confrontation against Philippine ships in the Scarborough Shoal on Wednesday, the National Maritime Council said on Thursday.Undersecretary Alexander Lopez, NMC spokesman, said that the PLA Navy vessels, which traditionally stayed in the background during such encounters, actively engaged in aggressive maneuvers against Philippine ships.

The PLA Navy's Type 500 vessel was documented shadowing the BRP Datu Pagbuaya at a close range of 300 yards, acting as a chaser and decoy for accompanying CCG ships. The PCG said the PLA Navy 500 engaged in shadowing, while the PLA Navy 567 maintained a distance of 7 nautical miles. It said their coordinated actions were aimed at supporting the CCG's provocations, including water cannon assaults and aggressive maneuvering.
