MANILA, Philippines — A Philippine-flagged oil tanker carrying 1,494 metric tons of industrial fuel sank 3.5 nautical miles off Limay, Bataan early Thursday morning.
According to Transport Secretary Jaime Bautista, MT Terra Nova was now causing a massive oil spill in the area where it sank.Bautista said Philippine Coast Guard personnel were able to immediately respond within 30 minutes after a distress call was made by the crew of the oil tanker.'Unfortunately, 5 minutes after the distress call was sent, the tanker started to sink,' said Bautista.
He said at least 16 crewmembers were rescued while one was still unaccounted for.Bautista said several private shipping companies were also assisting.He said they have not yet dispatched resources to respond to the oil spill and to conduct search and rescue operations for the missing crew because of big waves and the strong winds.Based on initial reports, the tanker sank around 1:10 am on Thursday due to the strong waves brought by Typhoon 'Carina.
