Now, Collider reports that Oppenheimer's box office has surpassed a new milestone, putting the film on the list of the top 10 highest-grossing movies with an R rating, both domestically and globally. With a running global haul of $578 million, the film surpassed Fifty Shades of Grey's $570 million and is now beaten by only The Hangover Part II , Logan , The Passion of the Christ , Detective Chinatown 3 , It , The Matrix Reloaded , Deadpool , Deadool 2 , and reigning champion Joker .
Oppenheimer's Surprising Success Explained As a Nolan film, Oppenheimer's box office performance was always expected to be admirable, but it had several factors working against it. Notably, the film is a three-hour, R-rated historical drama, none of which are qualities typically equated with big box office successes. Notice, for example, that almost all the movies above it in the R-rated global top 10 list are genre flicks.
The harsh juxtaposition between the two films' tone, however, ended up leading to the "Barbenheimer" phenomenon, which saw audiences excited to experience both. The viral nature of this phenomenon made general audience awareness for both films very high, which ended up contributing to a strong turnout at theaters.
In addition to the Barbenheimer boost, Oppenheimer's reviews were also exceedingly praiseworthy right out of the gate, with some critics calling it one of the best movies of Nolan's career. Audiences evidently agreed, because positive word-of-mouth has helped to make the film's box office drops from week to week relatively low. Nolan movies tend to have strong legs anyway, but Oppenheimer is evidently a special case, and it shows no signs of slowing down just yet.
