The associate degree nursing program at Grossmont College prepares individuals for state licensure and to practice in a variety of health care settings. It’s a matter of public health. Which is why community colleges throughout California — including the San Diego and Imperial Counties Community Colleges Association — are urging Gov.
The result: Pathways to becoming a nurse are becoming increasingly challenging for students from traditionally underserved communities at a time when the state’s population of older adults continues to grow. This is untenable and is creating a public health crisis when demand for highly skilled, culturally competent nurses able to address health care needs in our diverse communities is quickly escalating.
But there are not enough Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs available to meet demand. In San Diego County, for example, just two public universities offer a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program: San Diego State University, with an annual enrollment of 200 students, and California State University San Marcos, with an annual enrollment of 689 students.
This is critical because community colleges are far more diverse than most four-year colleges and universities. All colleges in the San Diego and Imperial Counties Community Colleges Association offering nursing programs are Hispanic Serving Institutions. Two-thirds or more of our nursing program students are from communities of color, with significant percentages who are bilingual and thus better able to communicate with patients.
