anniversary of the dedication of the San Diego Community Concourse. The project was politically ambitious, architecturally progressive and wildly successful at its goal of bringing art, music and civic life back to the city’s downtown.
The result was a spectacular “Community Concourse” housing a new city hall, a convention center and auditorium, a civic theater and a parking garage — buildings we know today as the City Administration Building, Golden Hall, San Diego Civic Theater and Evan V. Jones Parkade. San Diegans toured the new convention hall, exhibit hall and parking garage. About 1,000 members and guests of the San Diego Convention and Tourist Bureau attended an inaugural dinner inside the convention hall, featuring keynote speakers, pomp and ceremony, and eager optimism. The San Diego Union described the event by saying:
