Officer Austin Machitar was killed and Officer Zach Martinez badly injured when they were hit by a speeding driver in Clairemont
A roadside memorial with flowers, candles, and a few cans of beer is left near the intersection of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard and Doliva Drive in San Diego Wednesday for Officers Austin Machitar and Zach Martinez.
Machitar, who grew up in the Chula Vista area, was the son of a retired San Diego County deputy sheriff. He was a 2012 graduate of Otay Ranch High School, where he played varsity baseball. At a Tuesday evening news conference, Wahl noted the messages of support for the officers from fellow police chiefs, state and local officials as well as community members in the hours after the horrific crash. “The support has been amazing and I want everyone to know we hear you, and it is helping,” Wahl said.The chief described Machitar as “one of a kind,” while Mayor Todd Gloria called him a hero who “laid down his life in service to the city.”State Sen.
