Immaculate Heart captured its 13th Bergen County softball title overall and third in a row.
The No. 4 team in the state, the Blue Eagles needed a walkoff homer in the quarterfinals against Ridgewood to win that game, 6-4 and then cruised to a 10-0 victory in last weekend’s semifinals before facing six-seed Ramapo, fresh off an upset of a then-ranked Ramsey team in the finals.
The game featured more traffic than the Garden State Parkway or Jersey Turnpike on a holiday weekend, largely due to the narrow strike zone of the home plate umpire. And while that slowed the game down and meant that more balls were going to be put in play, that was never a concern for Immaculate Heart coach Diana Fasano, who’s team has been able to rely on its defense all season.
The Lodi native has been on a tear this year for IHA, hitting .380 with a whopping team best 48 RBI as well as 27 runs scored, seven homers, 10 walks and four stolen bases. If anything, what’s gotten to her more — not in a negative way, but in recognizing the magnitude of the situation — is playing for the seniors on the team and trying to make sure the next generation of IHA softball is just as good as the one that preceded English.
