Two weeks after voting to not raise a Pride flag at City Hall, the Newcastle City Council flipped its decision, voting to raise the flag after all.

The council voted 4-3 in favor of raising the flag, which went up after Tuesday evening’s meeting. The new vote came after a rally that led to the meeting with extensive public comment .
One speaker said, “While some may disagree with this decision, I believe our mayor and council members have made the right call. In a society where we often celebrate diversity and individuality, it’s easy to get caught up in the idea that every group deserves its own flag or symbol of recognition. Let’s be real: we’re all Americans first and foremost. We are united under one flag, the United States flag, and that’s what makes our country so great.
Two weeks ago, at this dais, I made some comments that I do not shy away from," Clark said Tuesday. "I encourage everybody to go back and listen again. Every word I said was very clear and very understandable. I did not equate the U.S. or the Pride flag with Hamas or MAGA or Antifa. People want to believe they heard that because, closed minds, perhaps, right? That’s what you want to hear.
