A majority of Newcastle’s city council voted against raising the Pride Flag at city hall. The vote, which went 4-3, occurred in Tuesday night’s council meeting.
Councilmember Paul Charbonneau made a motion asking the council to take a vote on raising the flag during Pride Month, which is held in June.“I brought forward the motion because raising the Pride flag is an easy thing for us to do as a local government to show the LGBTQIA+ community that we see them and that we value them.
“The most unifying symbol in the history of the world flies over this city council every day," Clark said. "That’s the American flag. That’s diverse enough for me. That includes everybody in the community.”“If we start raising flags, then we’ve got to raise everybody’s. Do you want a Hamas flag flying over the City of Newcastle? Or a MAGA flag. How about a Trump flag or an Antifa flag? We’re not going there folks,” Clark stated, “everybody is equally represented by the American flag.
He added, “I welcome civil, constructive conversation with anyone in the city who may disagree. A lot of people are emotionally charged right now on both sides of the issue, so much discussion may not be possible in the short term. Ironically, proving my point about the need for the government to stay out of people's lives.”
