Using a technique called magnetic resonance fingerprinting, the researchers hope to make distinctions between different types of breast cancer using a single, non-invasive MRI scan.

This will allow them to determine whether a patient’s tumor will respond to specific therapies and eliminate unnecessary treatment.

However, a large percentage of patients fail to respond to conventional chemotherapy. Nearly 80% show partial or no response. What’s more, it can require four to six months and multiple cycles of treatment to determine if a patient’s tumor is responsive to the drugs. Meanwhile, the patient is unnecessarily being subjected to the many unpleasant side effects of chemotherapy while receiving little to no benefit.

“The ultimate goal,” Chen said, “is to eliminate ineffective treatments in eligible subjects and instead tailor the treatment methods for optimum therapeutic outcomes for women with breast cancer.”
