The attacks happened over the past four months, police said, and investigators are looking for additional victims

A 28-year-old man was arrested Friday on suspicion of using an LGBTQ dating app to lure four separate men to an apartment in Escondido where he allegedly restrained and sexually assaulted them, police said.

The four victims told police they had spoken with the suspect, who reportedly used a fake name and fake profile pictures, on Grindr, Escondido police Lt. Suzanne Baeder said in a news release. They each agreed to meet him at an apartment, but when they arrived, a man they didn’t recognize opened the door, Baeder said. The suspect, who is Black, had reportedly been posing as a White man on the dating app. When his alleged victims arrived at the apartment, he would reportedly tell them the man they were looking for was a roommate, but that he was gone. The suspect would then forcibly restrain and sexually assault the victims, Baeder said.

Detectives, with assistance from a SWAT team, took the man into custody at his residence. He was booked into jail on suspicion of several crimes, including kidnap with intent to commit rape, assault with intent to commit rape, and strangulation. The attacks happened over the past four months, Baeder said, and police are looking for additional victims. Anyone with information about the crimes or who thinks they may have been assaulted can reach out to Detective Jess Santaniello at 839-4768.
