After a 2021 New York Times expose on the company, which alleged that Samir Rao, Ozy co-founder and chief operating officer, had impersonated a YouTube executive during a conference call with Goldman Sachs executives, the company — and Watson — had a newfound spotlight shined on it. The Justice Department lays out the YouTube incident in thorough detail, alleging that Watson, a resident of Mountain View, threw Rao under the bus in claiming that he “had acted alone and as a result of a mental breakdown.” The group also found that Watson had asked Rao to send a forged contract with an unnamed TV network to expedite a bank loan to the company. In addition to the fraud charges, Watson also faces charges of aggravated identity theft in connection with these incidents.
