What started as an experiment to make a better maternity running jacket spun into Vander Jacket, a handsewn outerwear company.

Her family eventually moved to Bend, Oregon, where Vander Neut enjoyed running track in middle school and high school. But she felt intimidated by racing when she watched her father run to exhaustion at the finish line.

“The way he was running, he looked like he was going to die,” she said. “I wasn’t sure that I wanted to do that because it looked painful, but then I realized that not all running is like that. You can be the runner you want to be and set your own goals.”. With training and racing guidance from her dad, Vander Neut competed in the 2000 Dallas White Rock Marathon where she finished in 3:47:52.During the process, she learned that her competitive side was best served through her artwork.

“I tell people I’m not a fast runner. I’m a really faithful runner,” she said. “I never had a drive like I have something to prove [in running]. It just wasn’t there. It definitely was there for me when it came to art. My competitive edge is with creativity.” Initially, Vander Neut enrolled at Baylor University, where she studied fashion design and fine art; but she soon transferred to Boise State University, where she completed her undergraduate degree with a focus on painting. After graduating from Boise State, she attended the Denver Seminary to study philosophy with the goal of learning concepts that could be applied to painting. In Denver, she met her husband, who works as a teacher.
