President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. called on lawyers in the Philippines to uphold justice, fairness, and human dignity, especially as the country faces new challenges presented by the digital age.

MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. urged the country's lawyers to act as 'agents of justice' by upholding truth and fairness, and protecting human dignity in the face of increasing challenges from the digital age. In his speech during the 20th National Convention of Lawyers of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) in Cebu City, Marcos reminded lawyers to uphold the highest professional standards and embrace the ideals of integrity and service.

'As members of the legal community, you are in the most fitting position to safeguard that Constitution—that living document that embodies our collective aspirations and that binds us together as a people,' Marcos said. 'The law must serve all Filipinos—not just a privileged few. Justice must find its way to the margins, where it is most needed—reaching the underserved, the unseen, the unheard,' he added. Marcos also called on lawyers to protect human dignity in the face of increasing challenges from the digital age, including cybercrime, data privacy issues, and artificial intelligence. 'The emergence of issues such as cybercrime, data privacy, and the ethical use of artificial intelligence presents not only technical dilemmas but moral ones as well,' the President said. 'Therefore they demand our continued commitment to protect human dignity in an increasingly digital world,' he added. The President said that the recent adoption of the Code of Professional Responsibility and Accountability represented a significant step forward in ensuring the highest ethical standards that guide every member of the legal community. 'The task before us now is to ensure that this Code becomes the very foundation of how our lawyers live and practice,' he said. At the same time, Marcos said that the climate crisis was an urgent challenge threatening future generations. He noted the crucial role of the legal profession in shaping and enforcing environmental policies to safeguard the planet. 'By doing so, you safeguard the rights of today and preserve the dreams and dignity of those that will follow us,' Marcos said.
