A 5.3-magnitude earthquake jolted Cagayan on Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 1, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). READ:
Phivolcs said the earthquake, which struck at 4:03 p.m., had its epicenter 26 kilometers northeast of Dalupiri Island in Calayan, Cagayan.Phivolcs said the tremor was “slightly felt” at Intensity II in Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte and “scarcely perceptible at Intensity I in Sinait, Ilocos Sur.
It was also recorded by its instruments at Intensity III in Aparri, Cagayan; Intensity II in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte and Candon City, Ilocos Sur; and Intensity I in Batac, Ilocos Norte and Sinait, Ilocos Sur. Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.
It said the earthquake may have caused damage to houses, buildings, and other infrastructures, and warned the public to be cautious as aftershocks may occur.
