Letters to the Editor
Readers appreciate the column and editorial on the charter amendments; offer tip to reduce the jail population; aren’t happy about Pepper Square development plans; and worry about the loss of Texas OB-GYNs.Re: “12 Dallas charter amendments we oppose,” by Mike Rawlings, Tom Leppert and Ron Kirk, Wednesday Opinion and “These Changes Aren’t for the Better — Council must ensure interest group-inspired amendments to the city charter fail,” Wednesday editorial.
1. End cash bail. 2. Sheriffs should work closely with local nonprofits that have bail-out programs. Make it easier for the nonprofits to communicate with bail out candidates. 3. Dallas County Felony and Misdemeanor divisions should have a consistent policy for cash bail bond refunds so nonprofits can recycle the cash faster for more bailouts after cases are closed. Work with the nonprofits to quickly get the cash bail refunds. 4.
Overwhelming majority opposition to the developer’s plan for high-rise apartment towers overlooking single-family neighborhoods was ignored in multiple public meetings. Emails to council, CPC members and the mayor received no response or justification for the plan. The plan adds over 1,000 apartments in high-rise towers to an area already flooded with apartments, with over 3,000 recently approved to be added.
Apparently, developer money is too big to ignore. When did local government officials forget they are elected to serve the public? Be careful whom you vote for.I agree completely with this letter writer. If you are an OB-GYN, why would you start or move your practice to Texas, where a frivolous lawsuit by an ancillary lay person could cost you your license, to say nothing of time and money defending it? It is tough enough dealing with difficult pregnancies.
We must carry on the work of these gifted people. I applaud Johnson for reminding us of these men and women who, along with Peter, have done so much for our community.
