Joe Barry’s 1956 Chevy 210 is everyone’s favorite flavor on Drag Week.
Editor Note: HOT ROD is celebrating the 20th running of Drag Week by looking back in the event’s history books. One of the most prestigious honors is to be inducted into themade a lasting impression on a generation of drag racers and that still shows today. Case in point is Joe Barry, the Colorado-based racer who commissioned Jerry Bickel Race Cars to build an all-steel, all-glasssedan in the early 2000s.
The classic Chevy, known as “Creamsicle,” was converted to a twin-turbo induction setup on top of the 598ci big-block Chevy engine. Barry found instant success, scoring a runner-up finish in Unlimited and ninth overall in his. Traction issues prevented him from running to the car’s full potential, and he finished with a 9.19 average. His single best run from the week was a stellar 7.57 at 191 mph, showing he was a top player against racers like Larry Larson.
Tulsa Raceway Park was the site of Drag Week’s opening day in 2014, and Barry wasted no time in showing his cards, blasting off to a 7.18 at 201.40 mph, indicating that this was a 200-capable machine despite all the steel and glass that adorned the chassis. The next two days weren’t as quick, but consistency and surviving every day are the keys to a successful drag-and-drive competition.
Barry came back in 2015 to run in a new class called Ultimate Iron, a category modeled after cars like his orange whip. He finished runner-up to Bryant Goldstone in the premiere year of the class. Later that year, he captured the win in the short-lived HOT ROD Drag Weekend event on the West Coast. Barry took off 2016 but returned to Drag Week in 2017, capturing the class win thanks to a 7.1118 average. He ran Drag Week a few more times with mixed results, with his last appearance being in 2021.
