Indiana's two largest teachers groups shared their legislative priorities for the 2023 session, saying lawmakers should focus on supporting teachers.

Indiana’s two statewide teachers’ unions shared their legislative priorities for the 2023 session by saying they want lawmakers to focus less on culture war issues and instead address the teacher shortage crisis and COVID-learning loss.

“Too many students are in schools where decision-makers have driven away quality educators by failing to provide competitive salaries and support, disrespecting the profession and placing extraordinary pressure on individual educators to do more and more with less and less,” Gambill said. Shelby Phelps, a high school English teacher from Evansville, spoke on how she currently works two jobs and has decided that next year she will start applying for jobs outside the teaching profession because of the burnout she and others face.

“[Students] are expected to still meet fourth grade standards, but they haven't had a regular school experience at all,” Richardson said. “And I feel that that's something that is putting a lot more burden on teachers and administrators and school staff overall.”
