The recent announcement that Platform Beer Co. would be scaled down to offering three brands has inched up the price of its cans for collectors everywhere.

“Where the increase is going to be is if somebody can put together a complete set. People are lazy – ‘It’s too hard, they give up, man I’ll never do that,’ " he said. Cleveland has always been a beer town, and Platform was a beer-can company – that is, the brewery produced beer in draft and cans, no bottles, at a time when the latter was the preferred production vessel. Now, the majority of craft breweries make beer in cans. That opened a world of options for collectors.
Some younger folks pick up a coaster at each brewpub they visit, he said. But often older, serious collectors seek cans from long-gone breweries whose can designs have changed over the years. Tracing the evolution of beer-can design is a neat slice of American history.
