Forrest Whitley makes first Class AAA appearance since 2019
Sugar Land Space Cowboys starting pitcher Forrest Whitley #29 pitches against the El Paso Chihuahuas in the third inning at Constellation Field on July 4, 2022 in Sugar Land.SUGAR LAND — Forrest Whitley continues to make progress each time he steps on the mound. But the results just weren’t quite there for the Astros’ former first-round draft pick Monday evening.
Whitley was pulled from Monday’s game after throwing 67 pitches, 43 of which went for strikes. He faced 18 batters altogether, walked two and hit another. Whitley, a 6-foot-7 righthander from San Antonio, was the 17th overall pick by the Astros in the 2016 MLB Draft out of Alamo Heights High School. Whitley began the second inning with a pair of strikeouts, but the Chihuahuas responded by loading the bases again and capitalizing with a grand slam from Brent Rooker. Just like that, the Space Cowboys trailed 6-0.
Whitley, 24, entered the night with a 9-15 record during his minor league career. He sported a 4.68 ERA over 204 innings of work from 2016-19 across various levels. He posted a 12.21 ERA and an 0-3 record over eight games and five starts for the Astros’ former Class AAA affiliate in Round Rock in 2019.
