Houston-area students in grades 3 through 8 made significant gains in reading and math scores this spring after dramatic learning loss caused by the pandemic, STAAR test data shows.
Preliminary results released in the spring showed mprovement among Spring Branch ISD students who took the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness during the 2021-22 school year. In Houston ISD, reading scores improved beyond pre-pandemic numbers in elementary through middle school. In 2021, the number of students who did not meet reading standards increased well above the state average. This spring, students struggling to meet grade level reading made significant gains. For example, in 2021, 48 percent of 6th graders in the district did not meet reading thresholds. This year, only 25 percent of the same class, now 7th graders, failed to meet reading standards.
