Authorities said preliminary information revealed three Black male suspects were in the parking lot with what appeared to be a burglary of a motor vehicle. Toquica said Almendarez, who is said to have been with the department for 23 years and was assigned to the auto theft division, approached the suspects, shots were fired and exchanged, and the deputy was shot.
Gonzalez said the two suspects were struck by Almendarez and were also taken to HCA Houston Healthcare Northwest. Both are said to be in stable condition.
