An off-duty Harris County Sheriff's Office deputy was shot in north Harris County when gunfire broke out between the deputy and people “committing a criminal offense,” according to Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.An off-duty Harris County sheriff's deputy was fatally shot late Thursday in a gun fight with a suspect in north Harris County, according to Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.

Authorities responded around 10 p.m. to a grocery store parking lot at 2929 FM 1960 near Aldine-Westfield, Gonzalez wrote in a tweet. “[I]t appears one of our off-duty HCSO deputies witnessed suspects committing a criminal offense,” Gonzalez wrote in an updated tweet. “As the deputy approached, the males opened fire and our deputy returned fire.”

The deputy, who was struck, was transported to HCA Houston Northwest in critical condition, Gonzalez said. He died a short time later.
