What changes did Hacksaw Ridge make to the truth?
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT While based on a true story, Hacksaw Ridge's recollection makes some changes to the tale of combat medic Desmond Doss during World War II. Hacksaw Ridge was released in 2016, directed by Mel Gibson and starring Andrew Garfield as Desmond Doss.
Desmond states that this traumatic event was what caused him to vow never to touch a gun again. However, the real events of Desmond Doss' life reveal that the argument actually took place between Desmond's father and uncle. Desmond's father pulled a gun on his wife's brother before being subdued, leading Desmond to have to hide the gun from law enforcement.
4 Desmond Doss Was Present In Two Other Battles Before Hacksaw Ridge Undoubtedly one of the bigger omissions from Hacksaw Ridge is that Desmond Doss served in two other battles before Japan. In reality, Doss was at the Battles of Guam and Leyte, both in 1944. The Battle of Okinawa was not until 1945, meaning the film omits Doss' role in the prior two conflicts. This change was likely constructed in order to make the titular battle of Hacksaw Ridge much more sensationalized.
